Bathrooms of the World

Bathrooms vary in every country around the globe. Here are just some things you could expect in a foreign toilet. To find out more visit http://www.designyourway.net/blog/inspiration/superb-bathroom-interior-design-ideas-to-follow-85-pictures/

When you’re travelling abroad one of the biggest cultural differences can be found in the country’s toilets and bathrooms. From holes in the ground to hi-tech toilets, you could find yourself getting a nice or nasty surprise depending on your location. There’s nothing more embarrassing than getting locked inside a public loo, drenched by a bidet, or using an offensive term to ask for the ladies. Follow this guide to some of the world’s best and worst bathrooms, so you can know what to expect when you go globetrotting.

Bathrooms in Japan
Japan is famous for its hi-tech toilets that do everything but make you a cup of tea while you relieve yourself. Some of the more advanced models will open their lid as someone approaches, then wash the user’s behind with jets of warm water with massaging and pulsating functions, before drying it with warm air, flushing automatically and closing the lid. In contrast to these gadgets, most public toilets are still simple squat loos. The toilet is always kept separate to the bathroom in Japanese households so make sure you ask for the right facility.

Bathrooms in Australia
If you thought visiting the bathroom was a safe experience, you might want to think again if visiting Australia, famed as a country full of poisonous insects ready to bite any unsuspecting humans that get in their way. Tourists are always warned to check beneath the seat of the ‘dunny’, as it’s a favourite hiding place for the deadly redback spider. The females have the famous red markings on a black body, but are small enough to go unnoticed without careful checking. If you’re using an outside toilet, it might be wise to lift the lid with a stick or pole as an extra safety precaution.

Bathrooms in India
Travellers to India will no doubt regale you with their tales of the country’s dodgy bathrooms, which are famed for their basic toilet and shower facilities. Expect little more than either a hole in the ground and bucket of water for the loo, or at best a rather old-fashioned contraption with a temperamental flush. Showers are rather more life-threatening, with many having an electrical switch right beneath the shower to heat the boiler. You’ll never have been more relieved than to come home and use a pristine white toilet.

Bathrooms in France
Parisians are incredibly reserved about using the toilet, and it is considered unseemly to use a loo outside your own home. Non-locals however, will get to experience a variety of toilettes from the old-fashioned squat loos still rife in roadside restaurants, to hi-tech toilets. The latter generally take the form of a glorified portaloo, sited in a public place. You have 15 minutes to do your business and get out, or else risk being gassed with the automatic spray cleaners and deodorisers that blitz the cubicle when time is up. And remember to ask for the WC (‘vay say’) and not the bathroom.
