Home Is Where the Hearth Is – Fireplaces Still Retain Their Popularity

Fending off competition from televisions and computer games, fireplaces – traditional and modern – are still the much-loved focal points of many British living rooms. To find out more visit http://lilomag.com/2010/03/stylish-fireplaces-design/

Fireplaces have been an essential part of the home ever since we cooked mammoth steaks in our well-appointed caves. Indeed, not so long ago there was a fireplace in practically every room in the house.

More recently, central heating has made many of those fireplaces redundant. Most remaining fireplaces are in the living room and sadly, many of them have to compete for attention with TVs and other home entertainment devices. Some have even been blocked up or concealed behind furniture – or even behind the television itself.

A deep-seated love of fireplaces

Yet many people still harbour a primeval attachment to fireplaces. So much so, in fact, that many newbuild properties are built with a fireplace – even when they have no chimney!

For decades now, real fires have been yielding ground to electric and gas fires and more recently ‘living flame’ gas variants, yet unlike the humble, wall-bound radiator, all these types of heating still need a fireplace in keeping with their importance to the home.

In fact, for many of us, the fireplace remains the focal point of the room and as such deserves to be shown off to best advantage. That means that the hearth, surround, grate and mantelpiece should complement each other and make a positive contribution to the overall ambiance of the room.

Whether it’s being fitted brand new, or as a replacement, or to reinstate an original feature, the choice of fireplace is crucial to the look and feel of a room. Materials and designs vary widely, and the size of room and the buyer’s budget will be deciding factors in which fireplace to choose. As with all important investments, there’s a lot to think about, but fortunately, there are people with knowledge and experience who can help to guide you to the perfect fireplace.
