Bathrooms as teen zones

If you’re lucky enough to have two bathrooms or more, why not create a teen zone? To find out more visit http://padstyle.com/category/bathroom

Many executive homes now have at least two bathrooms, and many people choose to add an en-suite to larger rooms in order to minimise bathroom arguments first thing in the morning. Extra bathrooms can come in particularly handy if you have teens in the house – and why not let them help with the design?

Bathrooms for teens

It’s no secret that teenagers are obsessed with their appearance. They’ll spend a fortune on bath, shower, hair and cosmetic products and then spend hours in the bathroom getting their look just right. If bathrooms in your home are limited to just the one, this can be tremendously frustrating for everyone else. That’s why many parents are putting in additional bathrooms if they have the space. If you’re adding a dedicated bathroom for your teenager, think about the following things:

  • What they want – if you have a budget for the bathroom, let your teen have a say in what you buy and where it goes. From a practical point of view, they are far more likely to keep the bathroom tidy and look after it if they’ve had an input into building it and from a parental point of view, giving them some responsibility helps them to assert their independence in a controlled environment.

  • How they use it – teens use bathrooms as the ultimate private zone, so ask them how they use the bathroom and what they really need to have. If you have limited space, as many bathrooms do, you may decide just to put a shower cubicle in, rather than a bath and if your child is a shower freak, that will do them nicely. If you have a teenage girl who needs the best mirror lighting so that she can perfect her make-up, that’s fine. There are lots of mirrors and cabinets on the market that have in-built lighting.

  • Adding some style – all parents know that teens have very definite opinions when it comes to style and fashion. Whether your teen is into baby pink or black and white, you can come up with a colour scheme that everyone can live with. Let them add their own touches when it comes to accessories so that they are really taking ownership of the bathroom space. You can always refresh the bathroom when they leave home!
