If you love nothing more than snuggling under the covers with a good book on a cold wintry night, listening to the rain hitting the bedroom window, there are two items of bedroom furniture that are a must: bedside tables and blanket boxes.
Bedroom Furniture for the Book Lover
Our reading habits tend to revolve around bedtime. In fact a survey for Bedtime Reading Week found the most popular place to read was in bed, with 65% saying their bed was their favourite reading hotspot (one survey by the BBC RaW literacy campaign found that 69% said reading was a more popular activity than sex!). But in order to read comfortably in bed you need two crucial things. The first is the right bedroom furniture – a bedside table is essential to prop your reading glasses (if you use them), your cup of hot chocolate (or glass of wine), whatever nibbles you are indulging in (chocolate sounds good?) and of course that all important bedside lamp. Anyone who has read a good book in bed but finds themselves fighting to stay awake and just wants to flick off the bedside lamp without having to budge will appreciate proper bedroom furniture. If you are one of the poor souls who has to physically get out of bed to switch off the overhead light, especially on a wintry night, it can ruin the whole relaxing experience, with that nagging feeling that you've got to get up and switch the light off. If you love reading in bed, you'll love your bedroom furniture!
Under the Covers
It isn't just adults who love a good book under the covers, any parent who reads to their child in bed will know how crucial a bedside table and the right bedroom furniture are to create a relaxing environment before bedtime. A lamp that is easily dimmed, a table for the bedside drink, and ideally a comfortable chair is an important part of the bedroom furniture, so parents can sit and read easily without twisting uncomfortably perched on the side of their child's bed. One survey has found that nine out of ten mums read to their children at least once a week, with 70% doing so every day, and it can be a crucial part of the bedtime routine. And it doesn't stop at childhood, teenagers are likely to be reading under the covers too – the 2008 National Year of Reading revealed that 45% of teens were told off by adults for reading something considered not to be 'proper reading'.
