Few people actually enjoy the process of cleaning, but we know it’s important for our health and we like the feeling of satisfaction we get from standing back and looking at how smart our bathrooms look. There are several ways you can help yourself to achieve great results:

• Clean cloths – this may seem like an obvious point, but you can’t expect your bathroom to be clean if you’re using a dirty cloth. Once you’ve cleaned your bathroom, rinse out your cloth and put it through the washing machine. There’s nothing worse than replacing the dirt you’re cleaning with the dirt on your cloth.

• Polishing towel – disinfectant can mark, even when you think you’ve cleaned it up, so use an old, clean towel to finish off your cleaning. This is particularly good for chrome shower fittings and taps, where a final polish with a clean towel makes them sparkle like new.

• Car wax – one cleaning tip involves using car wax, just once or twice a year on the tiling around your shower and on the shower door. The wax prevents the water from sticking to the surface, helping to avoid water spots and prolonging the life of porous tiles. Don’t put the wax on the floor of your shower because you will slip.

• White vinegar – vinegar is a great cleaner as far as alkaline deposits are concerned because it contains acid that will eat away the dirt and build-up. Vinegar and lemon juice is an old housewives’ favourite and when mixed in the right quantities, can be used for a variety of purposes. Wear gloves when using concentrated vinegar, which you might want to use to get rid of particularly stubborn stains on the inside of your toilet, or on the tiles around your shower.

You may have a favourite cleaning product or developed a fool-proof way to keep your bathrooms clean, but general advice is that if you keep on top of the cleaning on a regular basis, including wiping out your shower, bath and basin after each use, you can avoid the build-ups that often turn bathroom cleaning into a nightmare.
